Additional information

The Uniedaalder takes its name directly from the Union of Utrecht, signed in January 1579 — the same year this coin was struck — in which the northern provinces formalized their resistance against Spanish Habsburg rule. Guelders was among the original signatories. That a coin bearing Philip II's name was simultaneously issued under the authority of those same rebellious provinces captures the administrative chaos of the early revolt: the machinery of Spanish imperial coinage had not yet been dismantled, even as the political break was being written into law.

The .750 fineness was a deliberate reduction from earlier daalder standards, a pragmatic response to silver supply pressures during the conflict.
