The king holds a sword over his right shoulder and a shield or orb in his left hand, conveying regal martial authority. The legend encircles the bust within a toothed border, with the date 1578 appearing in the lower field beneath the effigy. The portrait is executed in the bold, vigorous style characteristic of late sixteenth-century Netherlandish hammered coinage. |
