Guelders had been absorbed into the Habsburg Netherlands by Charles V in 1543 after decades of resistance, and the duchy's coinage rights were retained largely as an administrative convenience — Philip II had little sentimental attachment to the territory. The Pronkdaalder series, struck at Nijmegen, was part of the broader effort to harmonize currency across the Habsburg Low Countries following the monetary ordinance of 1559, which attempted to bring the scattered provincial mints into rough alignment.
The Nijmegen mint's output during this window was inconsistent, and the "S" designation in Delmonte reflects the contested attribution of certain dies between mint periods.
