Obverse description Armored bust of Philip II facing left, depicted with short beard and elaborately detailed plate armor with articulated gorget and pauldrons, rendered in the refined Renaissance portrait style characteristic of Netherlandish coinage of the period. The effigy is contained within a beaded inner circle. The circumferential Latin legend reads continuously around the periphery, separated from the inner circle by a narrow flat field.
