Obverse description Armored and draped bust of Philip II facing left, depicted with curly hair and a short beard, wearing an elaborate ruffled collar and ornate plate armor rendered in fine detail. The effigy is set within a raised inner circle, with the peripheral legend running clockwise around the coin. The date 1561 appears in the lower portion of the legend, flanked by a mintmark. The portrait is executed in the Renaissance style typical of Netherlandish hammered coinage of the period.
