1 Daalder - Philip II with Portugal shield, Brussels

Philip II inherited Brabant as part of the Spanish Netherlands, but by 1592 his hold on the southern provinces was being actively contested by the Union of Aragon — and the incorporation of the Portuguese arms into the shield on this daalder directly reflects his absorption of the Portuguese crown in 1580, a dynastic union he was keen to advertise on coinage circulating in his wealthiest territories. The Brussels mint was one of the most productive in the Habsburg Netherlands, and the daalder was the backbone of large-value commercial transactions in Antwerp's trade networks, still functioning despite the city's fall to Parma in 1585.
