Obverse description A fully armoured knight stands facing left in the central field, wearing a plumed helmet and holding a bundle of arrows in his left hand — symbolising the Union of Utrecht — while his right hand rests upon a large heraldic shield bearing the quartered arms of the Province of Utrecht, divided by a cross with a lion rampant in one quarter and foliate charges in the others. The figure is rendered in high relief consistent with the double-weight piedfort format. A beaded inner border frames the design, with the Latin legend + MONETA + NOV ORDIN + TRAI + 1585 distributed around the periphery, separated by cross stops.
