Obverse description A crowned armored knight stands facing left in the central field, holding a sword upright in his right hand and a bundle of arrows — symbolizing the Union of Utrecht — in his left, resting upon a shield charged with the three lions passant of Holland/West Friesland. The figure is rendered in the robust, high-relief hammered style characteristic of late sixteenth-century Dutch provincial coinage. A beaded inner circle frames the central device, with the Latin legend arranged continuously around the periphery reading MO NO ORD WESTFRI VALOR HOL. The date appears at the base of the shield within the design.
