The "Leicesterrijksdaalder" takes its name from Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, who served as Governor-General of the rebellious Dutch provinces from 1586 to 1587 under appointment by Elizabeth I. His tenure was a political disaster — he alienated the States-General, accepted sovereign authority the English crown had explicitly told him to refuse, and departed the Netherlands twice under a cloud of failure. Gelderland continued striking coins under his authority well after his effective removal, a provincial minting tradition that outlasted the man himself.
