Klippe piedforts of this type were never intended for commerce. Zeeland produced presentation-weight multiples — here at triple the standard leeuwendaalder — as diplomatic gifts and as proof of die quality for the States-General, a practice common among the provincial mints competing for striking contracts during the Twelve Years' Truce period. The truce with Spain, signed in 1609, had temporarily relieved military expenditure while leaving the provincial mints searching for prestige commissions to justify their operations.
The HPM Ze 30.3 variety designation places this among a small documented group; the "var." suffix indicates a die combination not precisely matched in Holzmair's listings.
