Struck at Antwerp and Maastricht during the opening phase of the Union of Arras and the Union of Utrecht negotiations, this daalder was issued under the authority of the States-General as Brabant's traditional loyalty to Philip II collapsed. The "Ecu des Etats" designation reflects the States-General's assertion of fiscal authority independent of the Spanish crown — coinage as a direct instrument of rebellion rather than administration.
Antwerp's mint was among the busiest in the Low Countries at this moment, processing wealth from the city's still-functioning trade networks even as Spanish tercio garrisons menaced the region. The two-year window of issue closed as the southern provinces reconciled with Parma in 1579.
