Obverse description Half-length effigy of Philip II facing left, crowned and robed, holding a scepter in the right hand. The legend encircles the figure, rendered in Roman capitals, with the date divided by the mint mark appearing in the lower field beneath the effigy. The style is characteristic of late sixteenth-century Southern Netherlandish hammered coinage, with bold relief and somewhat crude, irregular flan edges typical of the period.
