Zeeland's adoption of the Burgundian cross dollar in the early 1580s coincided with the province's precarious position during the Dutch Revolt — financially strained, militarily exposed, and increasingly dependent on its own fiscal instruments after breaking from Habsburg administration. The "8 links" designation refers to the chain links flanking the cross, a detail used by collectors to distinguish die groupings within this type.
