Zwolle's municipal daalders of this type were struck under the authority of the city's own mint, one of the smaller civic minting operations in the Dutch Republic that persisted well into the seventeenth century despite repeated efforts by the States General to consolidate coinage production. The so-called Arendrijksdaalder — named for the imperial eagle associated with the Holy Roman Empire — reflects Zwolle's status as a former Hanseatic city still trading on older Germanic monetary conventions even as the Republic's own rijksdaalder types were being standardized elsewhere.
The emission period of 1646–1653 coincides with the final years of the Eighty Years' War and the immediate aftermath of the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, a moment when municipal finances were under considerable strain from decades of military contribution demands.
