Piedforts — struck at double the normal planchet weight on specially prepared dies — were never intended for circulation. In the Dutch Republic, they served as presentation pieces, distributed by provincial authorities to dignitaries, foreign envoys, and occasionally as gifts from the States-General itself. Zeeland, as one of the smaller but commercially active provinces, produced them sporadically rather than as a regular series.
The 1687 date places this during the tense years immediately preceding William III's invasion of England, when the Dutch Republic was mobilizing diplomatically and financially against Louis XIV.
