Prova pieces from Brazil's late authoritarian period occupy an awkward documentary niche — struck by the Casa da Moeda do Brasil as internal approval samples before full production authorization, they were never intended for collectors and rarely left official hands. The 1 Cruzeiro cruzeiro series itself was already fighting a losing battle against inflation by 1979; within four years the denomination had been effectively rendered trivial by price levels that would eventually force the 1986 Cruzado reform.
