Brazil's cruzeiro coinage of the mid-1950s circulated under the shadow of Juscelino Kubitschek's aggressive industrialization program, which drove inflation sharply upward almost immediately after he took office in 1956. The same economic pressures that made these coins necessary in daily commerce also began eroding their purchasing power before the decade was out.
By 1961, inflation had rendered the 1-cruzeiro denomination essentially worthless for practical transactions.
