| Beschrijving keerzijde | Central Garter star surrounded by four crowned cruciform shields bearing the arms of England (quarterly first and fourth), Scotland (second), and Ireland (third), arranged in saltire and cross formation. The angles between the shields are filled with the national floral emblems of the United Kingdom — the rose, thistle, and shamrock — rendered in fine relief. The Garter motto HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE encircles the central star, and the full reverse legend TUEATUR UNITA DEUS and the regnal date in Roman numerals (e.g. ANNO DOM MDCCCXLVII) appear in Gothic blackletter script, the entire composition designed by William Dyce in a distinctly medieval heraldic style. |
