Reverse description The reverse repeats the denomination mark 'V.S' (five shillings) at center, enclosed within a double circle formed by a thin inner ring and an outer beaded circle. As with the obverse, the design is deliberately minimal, characteristic of the hastily produced emergency silver issues of the Lords Justices coinage of 1642. The irregular octagonal planchet shape and the repeated denomination on both faces served as a practical anti-counterfeiting and valuation measure.

Additional information

Produced during the catastrophic Confederate Ireland period, when the 1641 Ulster rebellion had collapsed royal authority across much of the island. With the regular mint at Dublin effectively under siege conditions, the Lords Justices — the English crown's emergency administrators — authorized emergency silver coinage to pay troops and maintain what remained of Protestant administration. The dies were crude by any standard, reflecting both the haste of production and the scarcity of skilled craftsmen willing to work in a city surrounded by war.

Spink 6542 is among the rarer issues of this emergency series. Few survived in anything above heavily circulated condition.
