Obverse description Shield bearing the crowned arms of Scotland with a pointed base, flanked by saltires in the field. The shield is surmounted by an arched imperial crown. The surrounding legend is separated from the central device by a beaded inner circle, with annulet stops dividing the inscription. The die engraving is characteristic of early sixteenth-century Scottish hammered goldwork, displaying bold relief and angular execution.
