Gun Money was James II's emergency coinage, struck in Dublin from melted-down brass cannon, church bells, and scrap metal after William III's forces cut off his access to conventional bullion. The crown denomination was introduced in 1690 as the largest in the series, intended to fund a military campaign that was already faltering. Most pieces were dated by month as well as year — an unusual arrangement that allowed the government to recall and revalue denominations downward as the military situation deteriorated.
The sword-after-REX variety distinguishes this piece from the commoner stop-after-REX strikes, a die difference documented by Simón in his classification of the series.
