Obverse description Equestrian effigy of James II facing right, the king depicted in armour with a plumed helmet, brandishing a sword aloft in his right hand while mounted on a prancing horse with elaborately detailed caparison and groundline of foliage beneath. The portrait conveys a commanding, baroque military style characteristic of late seventeenth-century Irish coinage. The encircling Latin legend reads IAC · II · DEI · GRA · MAG · BRI · FRA · ET · HIB · REX, distributed around the periphery of the coin field. The coin is struck within a beaded border, and the overall die work reflects the skilled craftsmanship associated with the Dublin Mint proof strikings of 1690.
