Beschrijving voorzijde Right-facing effigy of King James I wearing a large ornate crown, rendered in the fifth crowned bust style of his second coinage. The king is depicted with a full ruff collar and armoured shoulders, his portrait contained within an inner beaded circle. The surrounding legend in Latin reads IACOBVS D G MA BRI FRA ET HI REX, proclaiming his sovereignty over Great Britain, France, and Ireland. A mintmark appears at the commencement of the legend, varying by year of issue. The hammered execution imparts a characteristic irregularity to the planchet while preserving the fine detail of the royal portrait.

Beschrijving keerzijde A crowned quartered shield of arms at centre, bearing the royal arms of England, Scotland, France, and Ireland, set within an inner beaded circle. The royal cypher IR (Iacobus Rex) flanks the crown above the shield. The whole is encircled by the Latin legend HENRICVS ROSAS REGNA IACOBVS, commemorating Henry VII's union of the roses and James I's union of the English and Scottish crowns. A mintmark punctuates the legend at its commencement, corresponding to the period of issue. The design reflects the dynastic ambitions of the early Stuart monarchy in a confident, heraldic composition.
