Gibraltar issued this piece as part of its ongoing WWII commemoration series, marking the territory's role as a heavily bombed but strategically irreplaceable garrison during the Siege of Gibraltar — a sustained Axis effort, primarily through Operation Felix, Franco's ultimately rejected plan to seize the Rock in 1940. Britain's ability to hold Gibraltar kept the western Mediterranean open and proved critical to the North African campaign.
The black gold plating technique became fashionable among Commonwealth commemorative issuers in the 2010s, applied over standard cupro-nickel blanks to evoke a somber aesthetic. It has no precedent in circulation coinage.
