Additional information

Henry VIII's third coinage was a deliberate debasement, launched in 1544 primarily to fund the ongoing wars against France and Scotland. Gold was reduced from 23 carat to 20 carat, then further to 22 carat partway through the issue — making precise attribution of individual pieces to sub-periods a genuine challenge. The crown denomination in gold was relatively lightly produced compared to the half-sovereign and sovereign, which means survivors in any grade are genuinely scarce.

Spink 2305 specifically places this among the 22-carat strikes of the later third coinage phase.
