Władysław Sikorski died on 4 July 1943 when his Liberator aircraft crashed into the sea seconds after takeoff from Gibraltar — the very territory issuing this coin. The cause was never conclusively established. A British inquiry returned an open verdict, Soviet involvement has been periodically alleged, and the wreckage offered little. Sikorski was at that moment the most important Polish figure in the Allied coalition: Prime Minister of the Polish government-in-exile and Commander-in-Chief of Polish Armed Forces.
The eightieth anniversary of his death at Gibraltar gives this issue its occasion.
