François, Duke of Anjou and Alençon, was installed as sovereign of the Low Countries in 1581 after the Dutch and Brabantine estates, having formally abjured Philip II, needed a legitimate Catholic prince to lend their revolt diplomatic cover. The arrangement was uncomfortable from the start. François chafed under the constraints imposed by the states and, in January 1583, attempted to seize Antwerp and several other cities by force — the episode known as the French Fury. He failed badly and retreated to France, dying the following year.
This crown was struck during the narrow window of his actual authority, making it one of the more politically charged coinages of the entire Revolt period.
