The "Year of Three Kings" refers to 1936, when Edward VIII's abdication forced a constitutional crisis that briefly left Britain without a settled succession. Tristan da Cunha, as one of the most remote permanently inhabited territories on earth, has long issued commemorative crowns through the Pobjoy Mint as a revenue mechanism rather than for genuine circulation — the island's population rarely exceeds 250 people.
Edward's abdication instrument was signed on December 10, 1936, with George VI's accession proclaimed the same day.
