| Obverse description | Right-facing draped effigy of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the George IV State Diadem, adorned with floral and foliate motifs, with pearl drop earrings and a pearl necklace, as modelled by Raphael David Maklouf. The legend ELIZABETH II arcs along the left field, while ISLE OF MAN and the date 1986 arc along the right field. The mint mark PM appears in small relief at the lower left of the truncation. The portrait is set against a deeply mirrored proof field with a fine beaded inner border. |

The Isle of Man's Pobjoy Mint was among the most aggressive producers of commemorative crown-sized issues in the 1980s, flooding the collector market with themed pieces tied to international sporting events. This issue marks the 1986 FIFA World Cup held in Mexico — a tournament defined by Maradona's quarter-final against England, which produced both the "Hand of God" goal and what many still consider the greatest individual goal ever scored, within four minutes of each other.
The "a" suffix in the KM reference denotes the silver-clad copper-nickel version, distinguished from the standard cupro-nickel strike. Pobjoy issued both simultaneously, targeting different price points in the commemorative market.
