The 1995 date marks the centenary of Guglielmo Marconi's first successful wireless telegraphy experiments, conducted in 1895 on his family's estate near Bologna. The Isle of Man's postal and coinage authority was notably aggressive in the commemorative market during the 1990s, issuing silver proofs on anniversaries that larger mints overlooked entirely.
Marconi later established a key transmission station at Peel Hill on the island itself, giving the Isle of Man a genuine — if minor — place in early radio history.
