Gibraltar has issued commemorative crowns in staggering volume since the 1990s, and this 2020 piece honoring Vera Lynn arrived just months before her death in June of that year at age 103. Lynn's association with "Forget Me Not" — and with wartime memory more broadly — traces to her 1939–1945 ENSA performances for British and Allied troops in Burma, Egypt, and India, concerts that earned her the enduring title "The Forces' Sweetheart" from the soldiers themselves, not from any official designation.
Tombac, a brass alloy, was adopted widely for commemorative crowns as a cost-effective substitute for silver after the 1990 abandonment of sterling in this format.
