Obverse description Right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, depicted as a mature draped bust with a diademed and elaborately coiffed hairstyle, after the fourth portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley. The legend ELIZABETH II arcs across the upper field, with GIBRALTAR continuing along the right rim and the date 2001 at the lower right. Reverse description Central depiction of the Greco-Roman god Uranus, shown as a seated male figure with long flowing hair, bare-chested and draped from the waist, holding a sceptre topped with a globe in his right hand. To his right, a large ringed planet rendered in relief dominates the field, and the astronomical symbol for Uranus appears above the figure. The name URANUS is inscribed to the left of the deity. The curved legend MYTHOLOGY OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM arcs around the upper rim, flanked by a decorative band of stars and a partial orbital arc at the base. The denomination 1 CROWN appears in two lines at the lower centre.

Additional information

Gibraltar's crown-sized commemorative program of the early 2000s churned out planetary and astronomical themes at a pace that made collectors skeptical, and rightly so — many issues were produced in high volumes with minimal numismatic distinction. This Uranus piece was part of a broader solar system series, a format Gibraltar leaned on heavily during this period when licensing themed commemoratives had become a reliable revenue stream for the territory's coin program.
