Philadelphia underway at sea, rendered in fine detail with superstructure, masts, and funnels visible above the waterline and stylised waves below. The ship's name 'U.S.S. PHILADELPHIA' appears incused within the wave field at centre. The circular border legend 'WARSHIPS OF WORLD WAR II' arcs around the upper periphery, while the denomination '1 CROWN' is inscribed along the lower border with the numeral '1' featured prominently at the base of the central design. |

Gibraltar's Crown series of the early 1990s was essentially a commemorative program aimed squarely at the thematic collector market, with subjects ranging from warships to Churchill to classic cars. The U.S.S. Philadelphia connection here is almost certainly tied to the frigate famous from the First Barbary War — captured by Tripolitan forces in 1803 and dramatically destroyed by Stephen Decatur's raid the following February, an action Lord Nelson reportedly called the most bold and daring act of the age.
KM#113 is common in unmounted, uncleanly-stored examples; the copper-nickel alloy is unforgiving of improper storage.
