Gibraltar's government has issued commemorative crowns prolifically since the 1970s, making KM#927 one of hundreds of collector-targeted pieces from this dependency. The Solar System series appeared at a moment when Gibraltar was aggressively expanding its commemorative program into thematic science subjects — a commercial strategy rather than any monetary or historical imperative.
These struck in copper-nickel were intended for the collector market and saw no meaningful circulation.
