Issued as part of the Isle of Man's prolific commemorative crown program under the Pobjoy Mint, which held the contract for Manx coinage through much of the latter twentieth century. Pobjoy produced commemoratives at a pace that drew criticism from serious collectors — the sheer volume of themed issues diluted secondary market values across the entire program.
KM#894 belongs to a Renaissance-themed series released the same year the Isle of Man was negotiating its updated financial relationship with the European Union, having always maintained a distinct customs territory separate from the UK.
