Part of a sprawling Gibraltar commemorative program tied to the 80th anniversary of various Second World War themes, this particular piece honors the broader male contribution to the war effort at a time when Gibraltar itself was almost entirely evacuated — some 13,000 civilians were shipped out between 1940 and 1944, leaving the Rock as an almost purely military installation. The garrison swelled to over 16,000 troops at its wartime peak.
