Issued to mark the 150th anniversary of the Great Exhibition of 1851, which Joseph Paxton's Crystal Palace housed in Hyde Park and which drew over six million visitors in just five months — roughly a third of Britain's entire population at the time. Prince Albert's organizing committee had initially struggled to secure a viable venue, with the Hyde Park site itself fiercely contested in Parliament before construction began.
