Additional information

The Battle of Sedan in September 1870 was the decisive engagement of the Franco-Prussian War, ending with Napoleon III's personal surrender to Wilhelm I — the only capture of a reigning French emperor on the battlefield in modern history. France lost Alsace-Lorraine as a direct consequence, a wound that festered for four decades until 1914.

The Isle of Man Treasury issued numerous crown-sized commemoratives throughout the 2000s covering European military history, this being one of several in a broader Napoleonic and 19th-century warfare series.
