The Battle of Copenhagen in April 1801 was fought not against a declared enemy but against a neutral fleet. Britain, alarmed by the Armed Neutrality of the North — a coalition of Denmark, Russia, Prussia, and Sweden formed to resist Royal Navy searches of neutral shipping — dispatched a force under Admiral Sir Hyde Parker to break it. Nelson, serving as Parker's second, famously disregarded Parker's signal to withdraw and pressed the attack, putting his telescope to his blind eye to claim he saw no such order.
Denmark lost most of its anchored fleet that day. The Armed Neutrality collapsed shortly after, accelerated by the assassination of Tsar Paul I just days earlier.
