Gibraltar's Crown issues have long occupied an awkward commercial space — legal tender by technicality, collector product by design. This piece belongs to a silhouette series that ran across multiple years, pairing successive Machin-derived portraits of Elizabeth II against simplified background treatments. The second portrait, sculpted by Arnold Machin and first adopted for coinage in 1968, remained the standard across Commonwealth mints for nearly two decades before Raphael Maklouf's effigy replaced it in 1985.
Gold-plated copper-nickel is the workhorse of the modern Crown market. These were never intended for circulation.
