The Isle of Man's cat crown series, running since 1988, is one of the longest-running annual coin programs from any British Crown Dependency, with the feline subject chosen partly to capitalize on the island's association with the tailless Manx breed. The British Shorthair issues within the series represent a deliberate pivot toward internationally recognized pedigree breeds rather than the native Manx, broadening collector appeal in overseas markets — particularly Japan, where the series developed a significant following through the 1990s and 2000s.
Pobjoy Mint struck these on behalf of the Manx government. The colored variant was applied after striking using a resin-based process introduced to the series in the early 2000s.
