Ascension Island has no indigenous population and no elected parliament — making a coin commemorating the State Opening of Parliament an unusually abstract choice for the territory. The issue was produced for the collector market; Ascension's actual administrative decisions flow through a Governor appointed by the Crown, answerable to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
The Sapphire Jubilee marked Elizabeth II's 65th year on the throne in 2017, the first British monarch to reach that milestone.
