Gibraltar has issued commemorative crowns prolifically since the 1970s, contracting most production to the Pobjoy Mint and later the British Royal Mint, resulting in a vast catalogue of subjects with limited numismatic distinction between issues. The Royal Marines, founded in 1664 as the Duke of York and Albany's Maritime Regiment of Foot, are among the more historically defensible subjects Gibraltar could claim — the Corps played a direct role in the 1704 capture of the Rock, which remains the basis of British sovereignty there today.
