Petra was famously "rediscovered" by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt in 1812, who gained access by disguising himself as a pilgrim — the site had been known to local Bedouin throughout its supposed obscurity, making the European framing of "discovery" a persistent historiographical awkwardness. The 2012 issue marks the bicentennial of that visit.
The Isle of Man Treasury has issued crown-sized commemoratives under Pobjoy Mint contracts for decades, producing dozens of themed series annually with limited collector secondary market depth.
