Issued to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, this crown commemorates the Handley Page Halifax, the four-engine heavy bomber that flew alongside the Lancaster in RAF Bomber Command's night offensive over occupied Europe. The Halifax bore a disproportionate share of early losses — its initial variants suffered poor high-altitude handling and were temporarily restricted from certain operations in 1943 until aerodynamic modifications improved the type's survivability.
The Isle of Man has issued RAF-themed commemorative crowns in coordinated series for decades, with gold-plated copper-nickel strikes produced primarily for the collector market rather than circulation.
