Issued to mark the centenary of Victoria's death — she died in January 1901 — this Gibraltar crown belongs to a wave of Commonwealth commemoratives that proliferated in the early 1990s as mints competed for collector revenue. Gibraltar's Government leaned heavily on this market throughout the decade, contracting the Royal Mint and private minters for dozens of themed issues annually. KM#138 is one of several 1993 Gibraltar crowns sharing identical physical specifications, distinguished only by subject matter.
