Issued by the Pobjoy Mint — a private UK minting house operating under license rather than the Royal Mint — this piece commemorates the Queen Mother using a portrait depicting her as a young girl, a deliberate departure from the aged official effigies that dominated her centenary-era coinage. The coin was struck for the Isle of Man, which gave Pobjoy considerable latitude in subject matter and portrait selection unavailable to the Royal Mint proper.
She turned 99 in 1999, dying in March 2002 at 101.
