Issued by the Isle of Man through the Pobjoy Mint to mark the 85th birthday of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, this crown draws on a photograph taken of her as a child — well before her 1923 marriage to the Duke of York, who would become George VI largely by accident after his brother's abdication. The Pobjoy Mint had by this point been producing Isle of Man commemoratives for over a decade, treating the territory's currency autonomy as a vehicle for portrait and theme issues that the Royal Mint would never sanction.
