Obverse description Right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, depicted as a mature crowned bust with a draped neckline, pearl necklace, and drop earring, after the portrait by Raphael David Maklouf. The Queen wears a jewelled crown. The legend ELIZABETH II arcs along the left field and ISLE OF MAN along the upper right, with the date 1985 positioned at lower right. The engraver's initials RDM appear in small relief near the base of the bust, and the mint mark PM is also present in the legend.

Additional information

Issued by the Isle of Man through the Pobjoy Mint to mark the 85th birthday of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, this crown draws on a photograph taken of her as a child — well before her 1923 marriage to the Duke of York, who would become George VI largely by accident after his brother's abdication. The Pobjoy Mint had by this point been producing Isle of Man commemoratives for over a decade, treating the territory's currency autonomy as a vehicle for portrait and theme issues that the Royal Mint would never sanction.
