Issued to mark the 1999 Rugby World Cup hosted across Wales, England, Scotland, and France, this crown is one of several Isle of Man sporting issues from the period when the Treasury was aggressively courting the commemorative collector market. The Pobjoy Mint, which struck the vast majority of Isle of Man coinage from the 1970s onward, produced these in substantial quantities for sale to thematic collectors rather than circulation.
KM#938 is the copper-nickel currency-finish version; a proof issue in sterling silver was struck simultaneously.
